General assumptions about the efficient learning, teaching and testing the knowledge of the foreign language of the adult learners:

Students come to the foreign language classes with the different skills acquired in their own first language, different formal education, learning styles, cultural background and life experience. All these factors influence foreign language learning. It is up to the teacher to recognise and respect all the differences according to which one will choose a learning model, materials and a teaching style.

Adult learners come to the foreign language classes for personal, educational or professional reasons and with the various expectations concerning the learning process. It is of great importance that teachers and learners work together in order to determine their goals and expectations and make sure that every syllabus, acquiring and testing the knowledge meet short-term and long-term goals of a learner.

Adult learners should develop linguistic skills, like speaking and writing in a foreign language, which will allow them to understand other people as well as to be understood when speaking and writing. Therefore, the emphases needs to be on these activities which will enable learners to express their ideas as well as to understand the others in different situations.

Foreign language students go through many predictable phases. However, what both teachers and students need to realise is that the progress concerning the linguistic skills can vary during the course. Teachers should plan their lessons in such a way that the new skills are introduced when the students are ready and that the already acquired skills were reviewed on the previous classes.

Foreign language learning encompasses risk taking. Adult learners will benefit from the environment which encourages risk-taking in the authentic situations.

For the adult students, foreign language learning represents a process which may take longer that the time spent in the classroom. Thus, the teacher’s priority is to help the learner become more independent in the process of learning.
